Autophagy is the process by which cells utilize lysosomal degradation pathways for self ingestion, and is the main metabolic pathway for cells to maintain survival under stress such as malnutrition. Autophagy is mainly divided into three categories, namely macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone mediated autophagy. Autophagy plays an important role in various diseases such as tumors, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.
