Carboxyluciferin (commonly known as FAM) and its amine reactive succinimide ester are superior to FITC in biological conjugation. FAM reagent makes formamide more resistant to hydrolysis. The FAM reagent requires simple conjugation conditions but produces high conjugation yields, and the resulting conjugates have excellent stability. FITC labeled nucleotides and peptides often degrade faster than their corresponding FAM conjugates and can be used to replace FITC reagents in most biological applications.
