Product Description
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting aminoacyl tRNA binding to the ribosome, blocking peptidyl transferase steps, and inhibiting chloroplast and mitochondrial protein synthesis. It also inhibits ribosome production of (p) ppGpp and RNA transcription, and is commonly used as an antibacterial agent. Effectively targeting various Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, especially those causing meningitis, it is commonly used to study protein synthesis and screen for the transformation of chloramphenicol resistance genes.
